What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files that are stored on your device (computer, tablet, or phone) when you visit a website. They help the website remember your preferences and actions over time, so you don't have to re-enter them whenever you come back or browse between pages.

Cookies We Use

Cutizy itself sets only essential and functional cookies, and no analytics cookies. Some pages show ads from Google AdSense, which sets its own advertising cookies (see Third-Party Cookies). Here are the cookies set by Cutizy:

Essential Cookies

These cookies are strictly necessary for the website to function. Without them, you could not sign in or stay signed in.

  • Session cookie (connect.sid): set when you sign in. It identifies your session on our server so you stay signed in and can use your download history, quota and subscription. It expires 7 days after you sign in, or when you sign out.

Functional Cookies

These cookies remember your choices to provide a more personalized experience.

  • Language preference (lang): saves your chosen language (English, French, Spanish, or Haitian Creole) so the site displays in that language when you return.
  • Video editor introduction (cutizy_editor_intro_seen, cutizy_editor_intro_snoozed): remember that you have tried the video editor, so we stop showing its introduction, or that you closed it, so we hide it for 7 days.

Local Storage

In addition to cookies, we use your browser's local storage and IndexedDB:

  • Theme: remembers whether you prefer light or dark mode.
  • Display settings: remember choices such as the list or grid view of your download history.
  • Thumbnail cache: results from the Thumbnail Downloader are kept for 24 hours so previously searched videos load instantly.
  • Clips without an account: a list of the videos you clipped without signing in, used to apply the limits for visitors without an account.
  • App files: a service worker keeps a copy of the site's style sheets, scripts, icons, fonts and an offline page, so the site opens faster and can tell you when you are offline. It never stores your pages, clips or account data, and old copies are removed when the site is updated.
  • Installable app (pwa-card-dismissed, pwa-install-counted): remembers for 15 days that you closed the suggestion to install the app on your phone, and that this device’s install was already counted (an anonymous total, no personal data).
  • Video editor: your current project, editor settings, recent colors and references to your recent exports are saved in local storage. The videos, audio and photos you import from your device are saved in IndexedDB, and your browser may be asked to keep them persistently. They stay on your device until you export: then the parts of your videos and audio that you use, and the photos you use, are uploaded for rendering.

This data stays on your device. You can clear the editor's data from the editor settings, and all of it through your browser settings. Clearing it deletes your editor projects and imported media, so download a project file first if you want to keep them.

Third-Party Cookies

The following services may set their own cookies or collect information from your browser. They are governed by their providers' policies:

  • Google AdSense: on the pages that show ads (the home page, features, about and our guides), Google and its partners may set cookies or read similar identifiers to show ads, including ads based on your visits to this and other sites, to measure them and to prevent fraud. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, a consent message asks for your choice first. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
  • YouTube: when you preview a YouTube video on the clip page, the embedded YouTube player may set cookies. See Google's Privacy Policy.
  • Google sign-in: if you choose to sign in with Google, Google may set cookies during the sign-in flow.
  • Google Fonts: some of our fonts load from Google's servers, which receive your IP address. Google Fonts does not set cookies.
  • Stripe: when you subscribe, manage your subscription or donate, you are taken to pages hosted by Stripe, which may set cookies for payment processing and fraud prevention. See Stripe's Privacy Policy.

Managing Cookies

You can control and manage cookies in several ways:

  • Browser settings: most browsers let you view, block and delete cookies. Blocking the session cookie will prevent you from signing in.
  • Local storage: clear the editor's data from the editor settings, or clear site data through your browser settings.
  • Ads: turn off personalized ads in Google's My Ad Center, or change your choices in the consent message where it is shown.
  • Sign out: signing out ends your session on our server.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for legal reasons. We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page when changes are made.
